Carr-Schilling Residence
Monterey
Casa Buelna, the historic site of the first girls’ school in Monterey, is located on two acres that have been transformed from extensive lawn areas into an oasis of mounded beds with drought tolerant Mediterranean plantings. Charming permeable pathways meander past adobe-walled gardens and a mature oak forest. Salvia, Penstemon, Euphorbia, Grevilla, lavender, roses and various succulents as well as native Ceanothus, Arctostaphylos and grasses are just some of the plants that are artfully combined to create a natural look. The “localvore” resident has a large food garden of vegetable and herbs in raised beds, a small fruit orchard, and a berry patch. This is an open, sunny gardener’s garden.
