Carmel Middle School
Hilton Bialek Habitat
Carmel
This property showcases two distinct looks: native plant habitat and ornamentals & edibles. Native plants thrive without irrigation in the Hilton Bialek Habitat, which is comprised solely of vegetation carefully selected to support our native species of birds, animals and insects. The Organic Garden is beautiful and bountiful: tall sunflowers nod in the wind; butterflies flit between brightly colored stands of zinnias and cosmos; pumpkins ramble among corn stalks; cucumbers peak out from beneath their lush canopy of leaves. Monterey County's first green public school classroom is under construction in the western part of the gardens and will feature a living native grass roof, wind turbine, solar photovoltaic panels, gray water recycling and eco-materials.
